How a Single Rookie Patch Auction Became the Hobby’s Biggest Story of the Offseason

There’s a point in every collecting cycle where even the most experienced fans have to stop scrolling and look up. In March 2025, a single trading card of Paul Skenes sold for $1.11 million on Fanatics Collect. This was the big moment for many people who collect sports cards. Of course not at a white-glove auction house. Not locked up behind glass in the vault of a private dealer. Online, in real time, collectors can see the bids go up.

Dick’s Sporting Goods bought it in the end, presumably so that people could see it. That tells us something interesting about the hobby‘s current state: it’s somewhere between the culture of passionate collectors and the culture of everyday objects.

That card wasn’t just another rare pull. It was a Rookie Debut Patch Autograph, a type of autograph based on something very specific: the exact patch that the player wore on their sleeve during their very first MLB game. Not an MLB spring training patch or a swatch taken from a bunch of generic jerseys. The game’s patch was taken off right away and sealed with a hologram that couldn’t be changed. It was tracked through a flawless chain of custody. There are MLB officials there to make sure this is real. The steps are very strict, which is something the hobby hasn’t really seen before at this level of consistency.

It’s clear that buyers care a lot about that story of authentication. Questions of provenance have been around for a long time in the card market. Where did this piece of memorabilia come from, and how do we know? When it came out in the 2023 Chrome Update Series, the Topps Debut Patch program seemed to have found a solution: make the verification process so tight that no one needs to ask the question.

Then it happened again in January 2026. At a Fanatics Collect Premier Auction, Nick Kurtz’s first patch sold for $516,000. Not as many as Skenes, but more than enough to show that this wasn’t just a fluke caused by the hype around one great player. Two cards, two huge sales—a pattern is appearing right now.

There is a big difference between this format and the standard Rookie Patch Auto that fans have been looking for years. Standard RPAs are based on game-worn jerseys, but they have more than one print run and aren’t tied to a specific moment. Logoman cards have the famous league logo cutout on them, which is cool, but again, there is no set date or event. There can only be one card, one game, and one patch in a Debut Patch. Numbered print runs don’t make that scarcity happen. It’s about structure.

It’s really hard to say if this will become the most popular format for high-end collecting over the next ten years. The program has grown to include MLS, WWE, and UFC. Versions for the NBA and NFL are reportedly being made as Fanatics takes over those licenses. Some patches were coming off of sleeves during games in August 2025, which is the kind of problem that would make authentication purists nervous, but Topps quickly fixed the problem by giving the patches better adhesive backing.

The Kurtz sale and the Skenes sale worked together to set a floor. Not just in price, but also in how people see it. One type of the hobby is now better than all the others, not because it costs more, but because the story behind it is harder to copy. A verified piece of history from the exact first moment a player stepped onto a major league field — that’s the kind of thing that tends to hold meaning for a long time, even when markets cool.

During the off-season, people usually talk about trades, signing free agents, and changing coaches. It kept coming back to a patch about the size of a postage stamp.
