Why a Babe Ruth Card Sold for More Than a Manhattan Apartment Last Month

There are only ten of them in the whole world. Ten. And the last time one was seen in public before the last few years, it sold for $450,300, which seemed like a crazy amount of money at the time. That was in 2013. People say that the market has changed.

There was an 11-card promotional set of Babe Ruth baseball cards in the Baltimore News in 1914. One of these cards recently sold for around $6 million. That’s probably because they wanted to stay anonymous. After all, they just spent more on a piece of cardboard than most people do on a house in one of the most expensive zip codes in the country.

What’s so special about this card? It shows Ruth as a minor league pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles, his hometown team before the Boston Red Sox came calling. He was 19 years old at the time. That same year, he played in 35 games in the International League and had a 22-9 record. This is Ruth before everyone knew what she would become. There’s something very interesting about that. There is no icon in front of you. The kid in the picture is from Baltimore and was still getting it.

The card was not very well known for many years. It wasn’t until the 1980s that collectors really started to buy and sell copies of it. The first one to sell at auction brought $6,600. The price of this item went from $6,600 to $6 million in about 40 years. This shows how the market has changed and how quickly an item’s value can rise if the right people start to notice it.

But it’s important to remember that not everyone agrees on the card’s status. Some collectors aren’t sure if it really is a rookie card since it was only advertised in a newspaper and not sent out to everyone across the country like most rookie cards are. Some people say that it’s actually a minor league card. These fights are important in this world. People think that the difference in value between a rookie card and a pre-rookie card can be millions of dollars. The market seems to have different feelings about this question depending on who you ask.

Another buyer recently sold a copy of the same card that they had bought for $7.2 million in December 2023 for $4.02 million, showing how tense things were between the two buyers. About $3.2 million in loss. Some math shows that they lost about $4,600 every single day that they had it. Heritage Auctions thought the card was still worth about $7 million before the sale. The market didn’t agree very much.

In this case, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the card lost its magic. It’s more that the market for sports memorabilia is volatile in ways that are hard to predict, just like most markets that are based on passion. In a short amount of time, a 1952 Mickey Mantle card sold for $5.2 million, a rookie card of LeBron James sold for $5.2 million, and Luka Doncic’s card sold for $4.6 million. These amounts add up to each other. When people get excited, the floor can shift without warning.

Collectable is a website where regular people can buy small pieces of sports memorabilia starting at $3 each. The person who bought the Ruth card chose to keep it at the Babe Ruth Museum in Baltimore. There’s something surprisingly kind about that. In a field that values privacy, a private buyer paying close to $6 million for an item and then letting anyone see it or even own some of it is an unusual move.

It’s not even clear if this card will ever break its own record again. But it keeps coming up, changing hands, and changing what people thought was possible for a 1914 piece of newspaper-grade cardboard. Just that makes it sound like a story worth following.
