As you watch a Jose Canseco rookie card sell for real money again, it almost seems like poetry. It’s not just a small sale on a slow Sunday; people are paying real, meaningful prices for what they’re buying. In early 2021, a PSA 10 for the 1986 Topps Traded Tiffany #20T sold for $1,750. That isn’t a shrug of happiness. That was a planned purchase.
In 1988, Canseco was the sports star of the year. No one had ever had a season with 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases. He won the American League Most Valuable Player award that year and was the main reason the Oakland Athletics made it to the World Series. For a while, he was probably the most exciting player in baseball. He looked like he came straight out of a comic book, and just stepping into the box could silence a baseball park.
But his reputation has not been good in the decades since then. It was his 2005 book “Juiced” that called people out, burned bridges, and made him a permanent bad guy in some parts of baseball culture. And most collectors, who are more like the public than they’d like to admit, moved on. At card shows, his cards were in dime boxes. They were thrown into eBay bulk lots. For a long time, most hobbyists agreed on one thing: Canseco cards aren’t worth your time.
What did change? The answer might have less to do with Canseco the person and more with Canseco the memory. People who collect his best cards now are of a certain age. They were kids in the late 1980s and early 1990s. For packs, these were the kids who stood in line at Kmart, pulled a Canseco, and really felt like they’d won something. Now that those kids are in their forties, they have extra money and a certain kind of longing that can only be caused by childhood heroes.
Seeing this market makes me think that the nostalgia engine that drives the world of sports cards is stronger than most people think. People are buying back cards from the so-called “Junk Wax Era,” when billions of them were made and they were thought to be worthless. This is especially true when the card has a PSA 10 grade and is really hard to find. The rarest of his rookie cards was always the Tiffany version of his 1986 Topps Traded card. Topps only sold those premium sets through a few channels, and mint copies are really hard to find. There is a real lack of that thing, and the market is reacting to it.
The contradiction in the middle of Canseco’s card market is what makes it so interesting. He’s not in the Hall of Fame. He is openly linked to the time of steroids. There are a lot of collectors who don’t want anything to do with him. His fiercely loyal fans keep coming back, though. Some of these items—parallel cards, short prints, and rare releases from the late 1990s—are selling for prices that would surprise even die-hard collectors. A PSA 10 1997 Pinnacle Artist’s Proof with only one other copy sold for $1,625 in 2024. In the same year, a 2001 Fleer Ultra Platinum Medallion with a number of only 50 sold for $600. It’s not an accident.
It’s still not clear if this is a long-term trend or a wave that will peak and then go back down. The market for sports cards as a whole has cooled down a lot since its pandemic high point, and many players whose cards went up in value have since seen them go back down. Canseco could go in the same direction. But there is something different about the way his collectors feel—it doesn’t feel like speculation as much as it feels like reclamation. The buyers here aren’t flipping. They will keep.
Some of the most exciting baseball of the modern era happened during the Bash Brothers era. The personalities were bigger than life, the home runs were huge, and the whole thing felt electric in a way that sports rarely do these days. Some of that was chemistry and some of it was a different kind of chemistry. Most collectors who are old enough to remember don’t really care. They remember seeing a man hit a baseball so hard it seemed impossible when they were kids.
