People who talk about education reform often think that for real change to happen, it needs to be backed by venture capital, coded in an app, and launched from somewhere within ten miles of Stanford University. Silicon Valley has bet on that idea for years. A lot of money has been put into dashboards, adaptive learning platforms, and AI tutors. It has worked in some ways. A lot of it hasn’t changed. While investors argue about whether disruption is better than sustainability, something much quieter has been going on in classrooms.
Theory trading cards, which are real, tactile, pocket-sized cards that break down difficult academic ideas into structured, easy-to-understand formats, have been used in classes on psychology, philosophy, sociology, and other subjects. You don’t need an app store. No level of subscription. Not a pitch deck. Clear card stock is all you need.
Take a moment to think about what that really means. Teachers have known for a long time that a lot of the time, students don’t have trouble because the material is too hard, but because it’s not organized well enough to reach them. When a complicated set of ideas is boiled down to a card with its main idea, main thinker, and use clearly shown, something clicks. It starts to look for patterns. Memory can hold on to something. Competitive card game players can remember hundreds of rules when they’re under a lot of stress: the format trains the brain to sort, compare, and recall information.
This is not a new idea backed by research. Analog learning tools, like manipulatives, tactile objects, and structured visual formats, have been shown to help students learn for a long time, especially those who don’t do well with screen-based instruction. What’s different is the setting. It’s been ten years of trying to teach digitally first, and the results have been so mixed that teachers are taking a second look at older methods.

Silicon Valley has always been smart enough to know that education is one of the few fields that has resisted structural change for hundreds of years. Amy Klement of Omidyar Network made it clear that anything that can be automated will be automated. She said that the real challenge is to give young people the skills they’ll need to survive this change. Work together, talk to each other, and be creative. The so-called skills for the 21st century. In a strange way, a planned card-based discussion between students in a classroom might directly improve those skills more than an extra hour on a personalized learning platform.
That’s not a reason to not use technology. It gives a more accurate picture of what well each tool does. It was said so well by David Risher of Worldreader: “In Silicon Valley, everything looks like a nail, and they only brought a hammer.” It’s not a trick that trading cards look like hammers. They are something less flashy but more useful because of that.
When people talk about EdTech in general, it’s easy to forget that the people who speak out most strongly about education reform are rarely found in classrooms. They’ve been to conferences, investment forums, and panel discussions where people are looking for ways to measure scale and return. When teachers use theory trading cards, they aren’t trying to get more students. That student in the third row doesn’t pay attention in class but really gets into it when they are given something to hold, sort, and compare with a classmate.
The education world seems to have been so amazed by what’s possible on a large scale that it has lost sight of what works in a classroom now and then. Trading cards for theory are a small way to fix that drift. They won’t fix the lack of learning around the world. They won’t get a skilled teacher a new one or fix the unfair differences in pay that exist between systems. They do, however, serve as a useful reminder that new ideas in education don’t always come with a press release. It can come quietly, like in a deck of cards, and it works because it takes into account how people really think.
