Why Pokémon’s 30th Anniversary Set Is Already Breaking Pre-Order Records Worldwide

When something truly new comes along, there’s a certain kind of electricity that moves through the collector community. Not just a new set with fresh art, but something that feels like an event. This kind of set came out with the Pokémon 30th Anniversary set, which is called 30th Celebration in Japan. It comes out everywhere on September 16, 2026, and pre-orders at major stores have been moving so quickly that it’s hard to ignore.

Before you think this is just hype, you should find out what’s actually in the box. In this set, each booster pack has six cards instead of the usual five. Each and every card is foil. The most interesting thing is that each pack is guaranteed to have one of 30 different Pikachu cards. The modern Pokémon Trading Card Game has never made a promise on this scale. Since 1996, Pikachu has been the face of this series. Giving it 30 different cards in a birthday set doesn’t seem like a marketing move and more like a real gift.

Most collectors think of the 25th anniversary Celebrations set from 2021 as the most similar. That set sold out almost everywhere, kept its value well above retail for months, and brought back a lot of fans who had stopped collecting. There are some similarities between this set and the 30th Anniversary set, but the 30th Anniversary set is much bigger. The list of cards goes from Base Set to Sword & Shield. It includes old favorites like Charizard and Lugia from Base Set Aquapolis as well as newer cards like Arceus VSTAR and Pikachu & Zekrom from Team Up. The lineup is like a highlight reel for people who have played or collected records from different eras.

A new level of rarity is also being added. This is something that The Pokémon Company has done with other special sets, and it’s usually what drives a lot of activity on the secondary market after the game comes out. There are still some questions about what the new rarity looks like and how often it pulls, but those questions are probably making people want to pre-order even more than before. Collectors who have done this before know that the chase cards in limited anniversary sets often define the history of the product.

There are more products than just booster packs. People are really interested in the Elite Trainer Boxes with Mewtwo and Mew as the expected cover Pokémon. Also, the 30th Celebration Premium Deck Set based on Espeon and Umbreon, two fan favorites with a lot of loyal followers, is likely to be printed in very small numbers. This kind of high-end deck set doesn’t stay on the shelf for long.

It’s impossible not to notice how different the pre-order atmosphere is from that of a normal expansion. Standard sets get people interested, but this one is making people feel more like they need to act right away. Part of the reason for this is that anniversary products are usually made in smaller quantities than ongoing expansions. Another reason is that the all-foil, guaranteed-Pikachu structure makes the product very appealing to even casual buyers. It’s not like you’re taking a chance on getting something good—at least every card in the pack looks good.

The September 16 release date for everyone at the same time is also important. In the past, anniversary sets sometimes came out in other countries weeks or months after they came out in Japan. This created a knowledge gap that caused prices to rise before most collectors even had a chance to buy at retail. This time, that gap seems to be closed, which should make it easier for buyers in the UK and US to get stock without having to rush — as long as they place their orders early.

It takes thirty years for a card game to not only stay popular but also grow. When you watch this build, you get the sense that The Pokémon Company knows how important this moment is and is responding with a product that doesn’t skimp.
